I put Petrie in the same class of geniuses such as Albert Einstein and Jerry Reynolds.

Well, a lot of teams passed on Rondo. The thing that troubles me is that the Kings desperately needed a PG in that draft and they decided to go with Douby thinking that he could run the point in the NBA even though he never really proved at any point that he was a PG and not a SG....Douby shot the lights out in his workout with us and won Petrie over.

No. Genuis is too strong a word for anyone in the NBA... Too much luck/complete unpredictability involved. Way too many "If this, then that" situations...
We Kings fan know about this... Grizz or Thunder could have easily taken Tyreke. Mike Connelly is decent - but they undoubtedly would take Evans, or even Curry or Jennings, to replace him if they could do it over again. Harden contributed nicely - but a backcourt of Westbrook and Evans sure sounds great from OKC's perspective.
What if the Bulls took Hawes, we would've taken Noah and we wouldn't be talking about needing rebounding and toughness inside. Nor would Petrie be accused of preferring non-athletic White bigs.
Brooke Lopez could have easily slipped to us. It looked like we were poised to take Jerryd Bayless until Portland dealt to get him. Instead Petrie went the "unconventional, lesser-known" route by taking Jason Thompson. Looking at the guys that followed for the rest of the first round - JT was about the best GP could do.
Geoff Petrie is no genius... but he is without a doubt, one of the best out there. Cleveland had LeBron and an owner hungry for a title and willing to spend yet has failed to bring the championship to Cleveland. Denver lucked out and got Carmelo, did a great deal to get Chauncey, and kept guys like Birdman and Nene to complement them yet they got beat in the first round this year. Jazz picked up Deron Williams the year they sucked badly and have repeatedly selected contributing players in the late first round yet they keep getting beat in the playoffs.
There are two things that stand out as bad marks for Petrie... the obvious one being Quincy Douby(us). The other - taking too long to blow the team up. I for one am so glad that Bonzi Wells didn't take the Kings' offer. It would've been kinda fun to watch Bonzi and Ron-Ron beat up the competition, but it also would have meant upper-echelon mediocrity for us. What's that?... making the 7th or 8th spot in the playoffs and getting beat - for about 3 to 5 years straight.
Hopefully, Kings have sucked just enough this year to get DeMarcus Cousins... Petrie takes him, he has a great year, and GP is golden again.

Some very good points, thnX
So after all this........... (Which there is no need to bring up again) he will be a golden boy again w/ just one move?? = genius??

Hindsight is 20/20. Nobody knew a thing about Rondo when he came out. Phoenix gave him up for cash, IIRC. Douby backfired unfortunately. It happens.
I'm not going to say Petrie is a genius, but if you compared him to other GM's, his draft track record is one of the best. Peja at 14, Hedo at 16, G.Wallace at 25, Martin at 26, Thompson at 12, Tyreke at 4, Casspi at 23. Nobody is going to have a perfect draft record, but finding Peja/Hedo/Wallace/Martin (all-star or near all-stars) that late is not matched by many (if any) current GM's.
dtineg summed it up well. I have questions about some of Petrie's moves -- the Nocioni trade, the Mikki Moore signing -- but when it comes down to it, he's right more than he's wrong. I feel completely comfortable with him running our draft.

Most overrated GM in the NBA. I've thought so for a long time.
He was a genius to get Vlade. I'm the biggest Webber jockrider on here but even I admit - no Vlade no run with the elite during the Adelman era. Period.
So getting Vlade was a move of great forsight.
Other than that he has been average or worse in my opinion. His trade of Webber for "flexible pieces" was the biggest dumb***** retard move I think in NBA history. What a crock of dung that turned out to be.
He has basically degenerated into a Maloof yes-man and I think nothing of him. He's pretty much a big phony... the GM of one of the NBA's cellar teams.
Douby, Webber for flexible pieces, and betraying Adelman = typical Petrie.
Vlade = Petrie on his prayers and vitamins getting lucky.
If I was a Laker fan I would laugh at the Petrie worship. As a long suffering Kings fan, I weep about it.
Go Kings!

No one "worships" Petrie. But lets give credit where credit is due.
Getting Vlade was a great move... indeed he was a catalyst for the best team in Kings history. However, that wasn't the only move that made that team...
Drafting Jason Williams at #7 - ballsy considering his baggage and lack of experience. Do you remember the surprise when his name came up? Do you remember how beautiful J Will to C Webb was to watch? How many GMs would have pulled that trigger?
Who would've drafted Peja instead of John Wallace (who?)? Who the heck was Hidayet? Certainly those guys were not suggestions from Joe and Gavin?
What about trading the popular Williams for the better, but also more "boring", Bibby?... the wins sure got rid of that opinion. Corliss for Christie was another main ingredient. Yes, Corliss went on to get 6th man. But Christie was a top-grade defender and one of our main guys.
What about signing Bobby Jackson? His hometown team didn't see enough in him - but guess who did?
There was the trade for Pollard.
What did Webber do after he was traded?... damn near nothing. I'm a huge Webber fan. Not sure what hurt more - getting killed by Duke or the timeout. But he was done. Toast. It was painful to watch.
Betraying Adelman was a yes-man move... but I find it hard to blame him for that. It's a business - his bosses wanted Adelman gone - what would you or any of us have done?
Petrie did not pull off any moves for Garnett or Gasol. He didn't get Steve Nash when the Mavs made the mistake of letting him go.
But he did draft the ROY instead of no-show Rubio. He has put the team in a good salary cap position. He traded away a bad back for a bad attitude, and then traded that bad attitude for 2 solid players who are poised to be big contributors, and as a bonus brought back one of our most beloved players.
Many GMs would've succumb to the media hype that was Rubio. How screwed would the Kings be if we drafted him?... how hopeful are Kings fans now with Tyreke?
Petrie has proven that he does his research, Douby aside. He's shown that he has the balls to be unconventional and go against "the consensus" - and it has worked out for the most part.
It's funny that a Kings fan would find Petrie that bad... he's proven to be one of the best.

dtineg I think that is a pretty fair albeit rose colored glasses view.
Dirk Nowitzki or Paul Pierce might have been more rewarding in the long run than Jdub though maybe?
Kings fans get emotional about our Pollards and Brockmans but these aren't genuis moves these are journeymen.
I give more credit for Jon Barry than for Scot Pollard, but hey those were magic times.
All in all, I just think he's kind of all right. Not genius but he gets hyped by the home crowd like he is Connie Mack or something.

Nowitzki was Dallas' (even better) Peja. An unknown Euro that made it big. It was weird to see Pierce drop and drop - I think he was projected in top 3 that year. One of those odd instances where he didn't go as high as projected but should have. That team would not have been the same though - maybe they would've been better, maybe not.
There were more "journeyman" type guys that came and went... the impressive thing about them/Petrie - it almost always worked. Vernon Maxwell, Jim Jackson, Keon Clark - they all contributed to the Ws that used to come our way regularly.
Admittedly my views are "rose-colored"... sub-30 win teams will do that to a fan.

Oh well, the past is the past. I'm 50/50 on Petrie, but I'm starting over beginning with his last draft. Tyreke and Omri look like great picks. Now I am expecting him to continue his great drafting from last year and finally draft a legit NBA center in Cousins.

Not sure who is to blame for betraying virtually every member of those King's teams. Did Petrie betray the the players on those great Portland teams? I don't remember.
Vlade was betrayed. He should have retired as a King.
Doug Christie was betrayed. He should have retired as a King.
Peja wanted to go after Vlade was betrayed.
In hind site, maybe Webber should have stayed long enough to have the fans turn on him and retired a King.
Adelman was betrayed.
Should Bibby come back and retire as a King?
Bobby Jackson came back to retire as a King. The only one so far . . .
In my mind, Legacy begins with loyalty. All of those players should have retired as a King.

That rarely happens now days......
As they say "this is a buisiness"...........
IMHO the only one I really am still bugged about is the Vladie deal, which resulted in the Peja deal.......... It was just stupid for a couple million......
He, not webber or adleman was the leader of the team......
He was worth far more than flop clinics & bar service @ his wife's place...
To bad jeoff or the Maloof Bro's never saw that..

Not sure if Vlade was "betrayed"...
Dude didn't play but 5 minutes in 2 years for L.A.
True... he was the leader of the best Kings team - the team that "shoulda" won it. But does that equal paying him for "nothing" or for "past accomplishments" - like he wasn't getting paid enough before.
Also, Vlade's heart has always been in L.A. Can't blame him... Lakers brought him into the league when next to no one was bringing Euros to the NBA.
I didn't see much reason, other than "loyalty" and/or using him as high-paid assistant, to keep him on the team. As a fan, I'd rather see management strive to win, rather than be loyal to non-contributing players.
Loyalty would not have been a good thing for us. It would have been hideous to watch our once great starting five of Divac, Webber, Stojakovic, Christie, and Bibby hobble up and down the court. And they all would have been overpaid.
Petrie should've been blown this team up sooner, with no regard to loyalty whatsoever.

I don't know, but the way expiring contracts have become valuable, why not keep your overpaid players that have left everything on the floor for you? In a perfect world, they retire and the contract comes off the books. They stay around to provide leadership and legacy to the franchise. Letting Vlade walk over a couple of million bucks was criminal and the beginning of the end.

He took the consensus BPA both times.... and filled a need at the same time. cannot find any fault.
Actually - that was a badass draft. Could not have been better.
Suddenly we are one of the biggest youngest and toughest teams in the league. Not one of the best... but DEFINITELY one of the biggest and youngest.
I'm not sure what happened... but if Beno can keep his head out of his a$$ we are looking like a fun team to follow next year.
Really exciting!
