After dropping 140 points on the Charlotte Hornets less than 48 hours earlier, the Sacramento Kings completely lost their mojo Sunday afternoon as they fell to a gritty Indiana pacers squad 91-94 at Golden 1 Center. The frustrating defeat moved Sacramento back to the .500 mark at 5-5 for the season. The Kings shot just 36.9 percent from the field, but the more telling stat was the rebounding numbers, as the Pacers grabbed 54 boards to just 33 for Sac. Indiana’s giant front-line of Domantas Sabonis and Miles Turner combined for 26 of those boards. Indiana was just the more physical team this afternoon, and they bullied Sacramento for 48 minutes. For the third straight game, the Sacramento Kings suffered a total collapse of execution in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Golden State Warriors 107-119 Sunday evening at the Golden 1 Center. The loss dropped the team to a disappointing 1-2 mark on this early season. For three entertaining quarters, the Kings and Warriors treated the fans to a playoff-like atmosphere as the two teams traded buckets at a furious pace. Sacramento trailed by just two points going into the final frame, but Golden State then quickly established themselves as the composed team, while the Kings bumbled their way to another frustrating defeat. Sacramento committed 19 turnovers that led to 29 Golden State points. Meanwhile, the Warriors had just six turnovers as the Kings recorded zero steals for the game. De’Aaron Fox’s final numbers may have looked good, as he finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and six assists, but he was a total non-factor throughout the game and has really struggled in the early season. The Sacramento Kings controlled the best team in the Western Conference for 44 minutes but could not close the deal as they fell to the Utah Jazz 110-101 Friday night in their home opener at Golden 1 Center. The loss dropped Sacramento to 1-1 on the season. Harrison Barnes followed up his career scoring effort Wednesday night with a new career rebounding mark on Friday. The Kings’ everything forward finished with 25 points and 15 boards for the game. Buddy Hield scored his jersey number (24) by hitting six three-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Of course, the Kings will need to win their share of games first, but he is quickly looking like head coach Luke Walton’s instant offense off the bench as he has clearly been given the green light to shoot at will. The Sacramento Kings have started the process of bulking up their frontcourt, while clearing out a crowded backcourt. On Friday it was reported that the Kings have agreed to ship veteran point guard Delon Wright to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal that would bring center/forward Tristan Thompson to Sacramento from the Boston Celtics. Thompson, 30, brings experience, size and toughness to the paint, something the Kings have had in limited supply of late. While not a serious scoring threat, he is very efficient around the basket and a tenacious offensive rebounder. Last season with the Celtics, he averaged 7.6 points and 8.1 rebounds in limited minutes. The trade likely signals a future move by the Kings to acquire a starting-caliber center. While Thompson can start in a pinch, having him as your opening day 5 would be viewed as a failure for general manager Monte McNair. Last year’s starting center Richaun Holmes is still a realistic target for the Kings and having Thompson back him up would make a very nice 1-2 punch at the 5. However, Holmes is going to test the free-agent market this summer and there are no guarantees that he will return to Sacramento. The Kings are limited to offering Holmes just $10.4 million for 2021-22 due to restrictions by the CBA. If he will agree to a discount for the upcoming season, Sacramento could offer much more next summer as they would hold his Bird rights (3 years of service). Sacramento does have two other centers on the roster. 7-foot journeyman center Damian Jones has shown hints of some real talent, but more needs to be seen before he is ready for the spotlight. Rookie Neemias Queta is a project with mad defensive skills, but it is too early to project his place with the Kings right now. And yes, there is still a chance that Marvin Bagley could remain in the picture. The often-injured bigman could possibly shift over to the 5 at times if the Kings decide to go with a center-by-committee approach. Not likely, but still on the table as of now. It was recently reported that Sacramento and Memphis were in advanced talks to swap Begley and the ninth pick in the 2021 draft for center Jonas Valanciunas, but the deal fell through at the last minute and the Grizzlies ended up making a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans instead. Blerg! The 6-9 Thompson is in the final year of his contract that will cost the Kings $9.7 million. It was not that Boston did not want his services, it was just that they were up against the luxury tax and desperately needed to shed salary. They had originally hoped he could be a primary scoring threat in the paint, but that just isn’t his thing. He is an extremely good backup big in the MBA these days, nothing more. The move temporarily adds about $1.2 million in salary, but many more moves are expected by McNair in the coming weeks. Decisions on guards Buddy Hield and Terrance Davis, as well as Bagley need to be made, and there is still hope that a major move is coming that could dramatically shakeup the frontcourt. Stay tuned! Move over creepy cardboard cutouts, real fans are coming back to the G1C. Starting April 20, the Sacramento Kings will be welcoming back as many as 3,500 Kings fans into the Golden 1 Center following Friday’s announcement by California Governor Gavin Newsom that indoor facilities in the state can begin reopening to limited capacity. While the final details on exactly how many fans can return and whether they will be required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination or recent testing results has not been announced, it is still great news for the Kings’ faithful who want to cheer on the squad as they make their push for the 2021 NBA Playoffs. “We are excited about today’s announcement regarding indoor professional sports venues and look forward to safely welcoming fans back to the arena in the near future”, in a statement by the Sacramento Kings. “ On behalf of the entire organization, we thank Governor Newsom, state and county public health officials and the NBA who have worked tirelessly to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, providing prevention guidelines and protocols and for collaborating to create a robust health and safety plan that enables guests to return to Golden 1 Center.” Based on the remaining schedule, Sacramento will host eight games to close out the regular season, with matchups against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz, San Antonio Spurs, and Oklahoma City Thunder . The Sacramento Kings closed out their season-long 6-game road trip with a solid 119-105 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday night at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The win was the team’s fourth in their last seven games. De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 30 points and six assists, while new starting backcourt teammate Tyrese Haliburton finished with a career-high 28 points on 11-for-15 shooting. Harrison Barnes quietly nearly snagged a triple-double with nine points, ten rebounds, and eight assists, and was vocal all night encouraging his teammates on defense. De’Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley were both sidelined with injuries and the Sacramento Kings put forth a rather uninspired effort in a disappointing 123-112 loss to the Orlando Magic Friday nigh at the Golden 1 Center. The defeat dropped the squad to 12-13 for the season. Fox (knee) and Bagley (calf) were both held out of the contest, so rookie Tyrese Haliburton got his second start of the season. He finished with 14 points and seven assists but was far from his usual winning ways. In fact, the entire starting lineup was rather unimpressive all night. Especially on the defensive side as they allowed Orlando to shoot 50.5 percent from the field, including 44.1 percent from deep. Those numbers are reminiscent of Sacramento’s struggles earlier in the season when they lost 9-of-11 games and showed no pride in their defense. Orlando’s Nikola Vicevic dominated the Kings’ throughout the game hitting from all over the court for 42 points, just one off his career high. In the last week guys named Nikola have lit up the Kings for 92 points, as Denver’s Nikola Jokic dropped 50 on Sacramento last Saturday. Some bright news for Sacramento was the return of Nemanja Bjelica who came off the bench to score 15 points, grab nine rebounds, and dish out six assists in 28 minutes of action. While he probably will not be with the team much longer as trade rumors abound, putting up such a stat line after missing so many games can only improve the Kings’ return on any trade. The guy can still play ball. Sacramento will need to get it together soon as the Memphis Grizzlies come to town on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon they took down the vaunted Los Angeles Clippers 113-110 at the Staples Center to earn their seventh victory in their last eight games. Despite Nikola Jokic’s career-high 50 points, the Sacramento Kings played one of their most complete games of the season in a thrilling 119-114 victory over the Denver Nuggets Saturday afternoon at the Golden 1 Center. The win earned the Kings a 3-0 season sweep of the Nuggets and brought their record back to the .500 mark at 11-11. Harrison Barnes led four players with 20+ for the game with 28 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Richaun Holmes added 21 points and 10 rebounds. Richaun Holmes’ desperation shot at the buzzer was blocked by bam Adebayo and the Miami Heat escaped with a 105-104 victory over the Sacramento Kings Saturday night at American Airlines Arena. The loss snapped Sacramento’s brief three-game winning streak and dropped them to 8-11 for the season. Marvin Bagley scored an efficient 17 points on 7-8 shooting, including 3-4 from deep. The third year forward has really developed his long-range game and is now shooting at a very respectable 37 percent from deep. He is clearly working on the aspects of his game that are expected of bigs in the NBA these days. De’Aaron Fox scored 17 of his team-high 26 points in the final quarter and it looked at times as if the point guard might single-handedly will his team to the victory, but he was unable to execute the final play which resulted in Holmes throwing up some junk as the game ended. The Kings had the unfortunate luck of being the opponent Jimmy Butler decided to return against after missing three weeks due to the NBA’s health and safety protocol. The Heat’s star scored 30 points and had 16 free-throw attempts for the night. The Kings had only 11 attempts as a team. Sacramento now travels to New Orleans for a scheduled rematch with the Pelicans on Monday. Hopefully, they will get to play as there are some rumors swirling now that a Miami player may have been in contact with an individual with Covid-19 earlier that day. The Sacramento Kings are beginning to figure things out, and the results are winds as they survived a late rally by the Toronto Raptors Friday night to come away with a gutsy 126-124 victory at Amalie Arena. The win was their third-straight and brought them to within just two games of the .500 mark for the season. The Sacramento Kings looked like a team that had four days of rest and practice as they rolled to a wire-to-wire 121-107 thumping of the Orlando magic Wednesday night at the Amway Center in Florida. The victory was their second-straight and brought them back to within three games of .500 at 7-10 for the season. Buddy Hield broke out of his scoring slump with a season-high 29 points, including 7-for-12 from deep. He also grabbed five rebounds, had three steals, and a block for the night. But the big news was the team’s newfound efforts on defense. For the second-straight game, Sacramento put the clamps on their opponents, holding Orlando to just 41.7 percent from the field. Maybe all this team needed was a little Covid-forced break to catch their breaths and rest their bodies to find their mojo again. The Sacramento Kings battled their way through the New York Knicks for 48 minutes and came away with the 103-94 victory Friday night at the Golden 1 Center. The win snapped their four-game losing streak and reminded us all that this team can win games. Harrison Barnes had another solid game with 21 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Richaun Holmes finished with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks, while Tyrese Haliburton added 16 points, five rebounds, four blocks, and two steals off the bench. Both teams struggled all night with their shooting, with the Kings hitting just 41 percent from the field and the Knicks even worse at 38 percent. But, after weeks of their opponents seemingly hitting everything they threw up, it was a nice change of pace to see the team be able to grind out a defensive slog like this. The loss was the third-straight for the Kings and dropped them to a season-low 5-9 record. Fox hit 17-of27 shots, dished out 13 assists, grabbed four rebounds, and snagged four steals for the night., but it was all for not as the Kings continued to struggle on the defensive end of the court as they allowed another 120+ point night. Sacramento has allowed 30+ points by their opponents in each of the last 12 quarters of action, and they currently have the NBA’s worst defensive rating. As the G1C has not been kind to the Kings of late, it will be nice to get back out on the road and away from all those creepy cardboard cutouts in the arena as they travel south to face off again with the Los Angeles Clippers. Sacramento Kings rookie guard Jahmi’us Ramsey had an MRI performed on Thursday that confirmed a left groin strain. He will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks but is expected to be back ready to play in February. The 2020 second-round pick out of Texas Tech has played in just four games this season for Sacramento.
