The Sacramento Kings matched the Los Angeles Clippers bucket-for-bucket for about 21 minutes. Then the game started to slip away, and the result was an extremely disheartening 100-138 loss Friday night at the Golden 1 Center. The defeat dropped the squad to a season-low three games under .500 at 5-8. Marvin Bagley led the Kings with a team-high 20 points and five rebounds, while Richaun Holmes chipped in his usual 17 points and five rebounds on 8-for-11 shooting. De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield had rather “meh” outings with 14 and nine points, respectively. The story of the game however was the third quarter as Sacramento came out as flat as any team possibly could and were outscored 37-16. It was clear to even the most uneducated NBA fan that this game was going to get ugly rather fast and clickers should be at the ready. The Sacramento Kings held a five-point lead heading into the final period of Wednesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers at the Golden 1 Center, but the offense stalled, and the defense fell apart as they fell to 5-7 for the season after a crushing 132-126 loss. Once again, Sacramento’s offense was cooking for most of the game as they shot 52.4 percent from the field, including 50 percent from deep. But they were unable to make crucial shots down the stretch or grab a critical rebound late that ultimately led to their doom. De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield combined for 55 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists, while Richaun Holmes was perfect from the floor and free-throw line finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high six assists. Speaking of assists, the Kings dished out a season-high 34 dimes. But the defense let them down once again as the Blazers played just well enough to get the win. The Sacramento Kings woke up Monday night and battled their way to a hard-fought 127-122 win over the Indiana pacers at the Golden 1 Center. The victory moved the squad to within one game of the .500 mark at 5-6. Harrison Barnes led the way with an efficient 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. While not flashy, the 9-year veteran was steady all night sinking shots whenever the team needed them the most. De’Aaron Fox had 21 points, nine assists, and five rebounds, while Buddy Hield dropped six threes for 18. Richaun Holmes returned from missing the last game with a sore ankle to contribute 16 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high six blocked shots. Sacramento shot 56 percent for the game. The Portland Trail Blazers return to the Golden 1 Center Wednesday night for a rematch after they throttled the Kings on Saturday. The Sacramento Kings have completely forgotten how to play defense as they fell to the Portland Trail Blazers 125-99 Saturday night at the Golden 1 Center. The loss was their fourth in their last five games and dropped them to a season low two games under .500 at 4-6. Marvin Bagley led six Kings in double figures with 15 points and eight rebounds but had another miserable shooting night hitting just 5-of-14 shots. But the rest of the team was not much better hitting 40.7 percent overall for the game. After playing strong defense to open the season, the Kings have seemingly gotten away from what was working for them. A lack of toughness has come over the squad and they appear to be afraid to touch their opponents for fear of offending them. As a result, teams are bullying their way through Sacramento’s lackadaisical defense for easy layups, put backs, and wide-open threes. Tyrese Haliburton did get his first NBA start as Richaun Holmes was a late scratch due to left ankle soreness. The rookie finished with 12 points and eight assists for the game. Tyrese Haliburton returned to action and was clutch in the fourth quarter again as the Sacramento Kings came away with a gutsy 128-124 victory over the Chicago Bulls Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center. The win brought the Kings back even at 4-4 for the season. After missing two games with a left-hand bone bruise, the rookie (aka “Team Mom”) finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals, and no turnovers. He scored 15 of his points in the final frame along with three three-pointers when the team needed them the most. Sacramento’s starting front court of Marvin Bagley, Richaun Holmes, and Harrison Barnes combined for 65 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists. They shot 25-of-35 from the field, including 6-of-10 from deep. Oh my! Quick Notes De’Aaron Fox left the game in the first quarter with tightness in his left hamstring and did not return. The Sacramento Kings have completely fallen off a cliff as they suffered their third-straight defeat following a disheartening 137-106 loss to the Golden State Warriors Monday night at the Chase Center. The loss dropped the squad to 3-4 for the season.. De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes each scored 18 points to lead Sacramento. Buddy Hield continued his rather so-so season start with just ten points on 3-of-11 shooting from deep. Marvin Bagley looked like a 19-year-old rookie who is too scared to mix it up in the paint. Once again, he was outplayed by his opponent and finished with just five points on 2-of-9 shooting. He is not in any sort of a rhythm right now and it is hurting the team. But this loss cannot be pinned on Marvin, the entire team stunk tonight. The Kings return home for a much-needed 7-game homestand where they can get some practice time in and figure out what happened to both their offense and defense. The Chicago Bulls limp into town on Wednesday and if there was ever a chance to get healthy, that should be the time. Jinx! Quick Notes After shooting a season-low 38.9 percent from the field on Saturday, the Kings topped that Monday night by hitting just 37.8 percent of their shots. Sacramento was just 10-35 (28.6%) from deep, while Golden State hit 23-43 (53.5%). Golden State jumped out to a quick 8-0 start and never trailed. The Kings did hold the Warriors to just three offensive rebounds for the game, but that was likely due to their 52.6 shooting percentage from the field for the night and there was not much of a need for an offensive rebound. Sacramento Kings forward Marvin Bagley spoke with the media one day after his father tweeted a demand that the team trade his son. He opened by asking that the topic not be brought up, but one member of the media (not surprisingly) just could not control himself.

After scoring 64 points in the first half, the Sacramento kings could only muster 30 in the second and fell to the Houston Rockets 94-106 Saturday night at the Toyota Center. The loss dropped the Kings to 3-3 on the season. It was not so much a matter of great Houston defense, but more ragged Sacramento offense. The Kings shot just 39 percent from the field and dished out an embarrassing low 11 assists for the game. It was truly hard to watch this team chuck up bad shot after bad shot throughout most of the night. De’Aaron Fox led Sacramento with 23 points and four assists, while Harrison Barnes chipped in 19 points and seven rebounds. The Kings bench scored just six points for the game. Houston was not much better, but they had a guy named John Wall who picked up the scoring load for the injured James Harden and dropped 28 on the Kings. Eric Gordan and Christian Wood combined for another 42 points. DeMarcus Cousins played just 11 minutes and score two points, grabbed six boards, and had a couple blocks. It is truly sad to see how much he has fallen off. I can easily see how Houston could cut him and not miss a beat. Sacramento Kings rookie Tyrese Haliburton will miss multiple games due to a left wrist bone bruise suffered during the fourth quarter of the team’s 119-122 loss to the Houston Rockets on December 31. An MRI was performed on Friday morning confirming the injury which will keep him out for at least the next two games when the Kings face the Rockets on Saturday and Golden State Warriors on Monday. An update on a timetable for his return will be provided next week when the team returns to Sacramento following their three-game road trip. With 10:42 remaining in the fourth, Haliburton attempted a highlight-reel dunk after another DeMarcus Cousins slopy pass was picked off by Cory Joseph. Houston’s John Wall was able to block the shot, sending Tyrese crashing to the floor, landing on his left wrist. He remained there for a while before being helped up by teammates. He still stayed in the game for the rest of the quarter. The irony of the sequence was that Wall had been called for a foul. Houston then challenged the foul, and it was overturned, but during the original play, Harrison Barnes had grabbed the blocked shot and scored the basket. The result was no free-throws for Haliburton, no foul on Wall, but two points nonetheless for Sacramento. In five games, Haliburton has averaged 10.6 points, 4.4 assists, two rebounds, and has proven himself a valuable rotation player for Sacramento. Head coach Luke Walton has trusted the rookie enough to keep him on the floor to close out games alongside De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield. This is the same wrist Tyrese fractured back on February 8 against Kansas State that ended his collegiate career.

The Sacramento Kings had two chances to tie the game in the final seconds, but both shots bounced off the rim and the Houston Rockets escaped with a 122-119 victory Thursday night at the Toyota Center. The loss dropped the Kings to 3-2 for the season and sets the stage for the rematch in less than 48 hours as the two teams faceoff again in Houston to open the new year. Richaun Holmes continued his dominant play of late with 13 rebounds and 22 points on 10-of-13 from the floor. His play on both ends of the court has been so good that Marvin Bagley (four points, eight rebounds) cannot get into the games in the fourth quarter anymore. Cue Team Bagley snarky post-game tweets. De’Aaron Fox finished with 22 points, six assists, five rebounds, and four assists. Harrison Barnes led the squad with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Buddy Hield dropped in five three-pointers enroot to 19 points. As for the contest, Sacramento likely had no business even being close, but this team is different from Kings teams of late. Every time it looked like the Rockets were about to blow the game wide open, the Kings battled back. As usual, Sacramento struggled throughout much of the third period, but this time were able to pull back within one point going into the fourth and had as much as a seven-point lead mid-way through the quarter before James Harden and John Wall took over and closed out the game. Even though the result was a loss, this was a good game and clearly shows that the Sacramento Kings are a tough, scrappy team that will compete every night. Sacramento Kings forward DaQuan Jeffries just cannot catch a break. During his first on court action following a prolonged absence due to back soreness, the Kings athletic second-year wing rolled his left ankle when coming down on a teammate’s foot during practice Tuesday. An MRI was performed on Wednesday revealing a Grade 3 sprain. Jeffries will be re-evaluated in six weeks according to the team. The former Tulsa standout played primarily for the Kings’ G-League squad in Stockton last season before shining with the parent team during their eight-game bubble appearance last summer. He was rewarded with a guaranteed contract with the Kings for the 2020-21 season and was expected to be in the bench rotation. Point guard De’Aaron Fox suffered a similar injury last season and missed 17 games as a result. Fox came back much sooner than expected so we will see if DaQuan has similar super healing powers as well.

The Sacramento Kings used a 27-10 run to close out the fourth quarter to get a 125-115 victory over the Denver Nuggets Tuesday night at the Golden 1 Center. The Sacramento Kings were plain outworked by the Phoenix Suns Sunday night as they stumbled their way to a disappointing 116-100 loss Sunday night at the Golden 1 Center. It was not a pretty game, but the Sacramento Kings fought and clawed their way to a 106-103 victory over the Phoenix Suns Saturday night at the Golden 1 Center. The win marked their first home opening victory in seven years and the 2-0 start is their first in 17 years. This team is figuring out how to win games and it is fun to watch. Game Notes De’Aaron Fox had a dominant game with 24 points, seven assists, five rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. He also hit three of his seven three-point attempts and ran the squad like a star point guard should. Marvin Bagley recorded his second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. He is really beginning to find his game and be a contributor on both sides of the court. The Kings continued their dominance on the boards pulling down 56 Saturday night, including 16 on the offensive side. This is getting ridiculous; Sacramento never wins the battle of the boards and are quickly becoming one of the league’s best this season. Sacramento shot just 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from deep, but found other ways to score, like 33 free-throw attempts. This team is finding many ways to get points and it is great to see. As the Sacramento Kings kickoff their 2020-21 home schedule Saturday night against the Phoenix Suns, there will be something new greeting the local and national media as they enter the Golden 1 Center at the Northeast entrance. The new Jerry Reynolds Media Entrance was unveiled today to honor the beloved Jack-of-all-trades who has been a fixture of the franchise since it moved to Sacramento back in 1985. Featuring a plaque and framed images of the former head coach, general manager (Kings and Monarchs), player personnel director, and most recently TV color commentator will adorn the walls inside and outside of the doors of the newly dedicated entrance. “There has always been and always will be, only one Jerry Reynolds,” said Sacramento Kings Chairman and Owner Vivek Ranadive. “Jerry’s name is synonymous with the history of the Sacramento Kings and he will forever be a member of the franchise’s family. I stand with the entire organization in wishing Jerry and his family nothing but the best throughout his well-deserved retirement.” “For 35 years, I have been blessed to be a part of this incredible organization, and while I have received other honors throughout my career, this ranks at the top as the most meaningful,” said Jerry Reynolds. “I want to express my deep appreciation to the Kings for their support over the years. I will always have a special place in my heart for Kings fans and all of the players, staff and media colleagues with whom I had the pleasure of working with over my tenure, each person made the journey enjoyable and unforgettable.” Reynolds officially announced his decision to retire back on November 5, but it was well understood that the organization was moving in a different direction following the sudden resignation of lead-play-by-play announcer, and close friend Grant Napear earlier in the year and the subsequent hiring of ESPN’s Marc Jones to pair with current color commentator Doug Christie for the upcoming season. Reynolds had already begun scaling back his duties with the team a couple years earlier and It was just the right time for him to move on and start the next phase of his life. Jerry will continue to follow the Kings closely from his couch in Roseville and we should expect to hear from him and his opinion on the team for many years to come as a frequent guest on local media outlets, but on his own schedule and his own terms. He is also expected to continue hosting his podcast The Jerry Reynolds Show, so we will not be without that familiar French Lick, IN twang. And generations of media members entering the G1C will have a constant reminder of someone who’s unwavering devotion to the Sacramento Kings and excellence in every role he held has set a very high standard they can only hope to achieve.

Buddy Hield’s game-winning tip-in at the buzzer capped a hard-fought 124-122 OT victory by the Sacramento Kings over the Denver Nuggets Wednesday night at Ball Arena. With 25 seconds remaining in OT and Sacramento down 120-122, things looked bleak when Michael Porter Jr. blocked Cory Joseph’s corner three-pointer that would have given the good guys the lead. But this year’s Kings squad appears to be a different breed and they were not even close to giving up on the game as the Nuggets had the ball and the lead on their home court as the clock was rapidly ticking down. Just 15 seconds later, De’Aaron Fox made an amazing closeout block on Will Barton’s layup attempt. Harrison Barnes grabbed the rebound and ran the length of the court for the game-tying layup with 6.5 seconds left. Barnes continued his late-game heroics by then knocking the ball away from Denver’s Nikola Jokic with two seconds remaining. He drove to the hoop for the winning dunk but was blocked by Barton. But out of nowhere flew in Hield for the tip-in at the buzzer to seal the win. Buddy then proceeded to sprint off the court followed by teammates as they stole their season opener in thrilling fashion. This was a great performance by Sacramento throughout. They played solid defense when they needed to and neither team was ever able to establish a double-digit lead. Notes Fox and Hield combined for 43 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. After a slow start, they both came on strong in the second half. Barnes finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Marvin Bagley had a solid outing with 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth. Cory Joseph came off the bench to score 15 points and collect two blocks while his defense set the tone for the entire team. Rookie Tyrese Halliburton played 30 minutes and was clearly trusted by the coaching staff during crunch time as he scored 12 points, including two key three-pointers late in the game. The Kings grabbed 54 rebounds, including 18 on the offensive glass. Damn! We are not used to that. Denver’s Nikola Jokic was an absolute beast finishing with 29 points, 15 rebounds, 14 assists, and three blocks. He single-handedly was responsible for fouling out both Bagley and Richaun Holmes. Jamal Murray was completely shutdown by Sacramento's defense as he made just 1-of9 shots before fouling out late in the game. Two days after waiving center Chimezie Metu, the Sacramento Kings are reportedly signing the former USC bigman to a two-way contract for the 2020-21 season according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Metu, 6-9, played in all four preseason games for the Kings averaging six points and 2.3 rebounds. He impressed the coaching staff enough to force the team to choose him over veteran center Frank Kaminsky for the final spot on the extended roster. He will join second-year guard Kyle Guy as the club’s two 2-way players this year. Metu was originally drafted in 2018 by the San Antonio Spurs with the 49th overall pick. He appeared in 47 games over the past two years averaging 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds. Chimezie is a young, athletic big that the Kings can now take a closer look at to see if he can develop into a solid contributor for the team in the coming years. While it is still unknown if there will be a G-League season this year, he can workout with the parent club in the meantime and is eligible to appear in a limited number of games if needed.
